The village of Clayton will be able to continue
the long-running Clayton Riverwalk project thanks to legislation introduced by
Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, and passed by the Assembly and state
Senate last week.
“The village of Clayton is seeing growth in its tourism
industry and I’m proud to do whatever possible to support this community and
highlight the beautiful St. Lawrence River,” Russell said.
The bill, which awaits the governor’s signature, will allow
the village to transfer a small plot of land it owns to Dean Hyde in exchange
for a crucial stretch of land along the St. Lawrence River that will allow
phase two of the Clayton Riverwalk project to move forward. The property is
located along the shore of the St. Lawrence River across from the intersection
of Merrick Street and Riverside Drive.
Village Mayor Norma J. Zimmer said, “We’re really
appreciative to the Assembly and the Senate for passing this legislation.
Without this 14-foot stretch of land the project would have been in jeopardy.”
Phase one saw the Clayton Riverwalk completed along the St.
Lawrence River from Jane Street to the village’s pavilion. Phase two, paid for
by a state grant with matching funds from the village, will stretch from the
pavilion to the Veterans Monument on John Street.
“The Clayton Riverwalk is another example of the village
working to present its best face to developers and tourists,” Russell said. “When
it’s completed, the village will have public waterfront access throughout
downtown, ensuring continued economic growth in addition to making the village
a beautiful and fun place for visitors and residents alike.”
