Assemblywoman Russell passes bill to promote economic growth in Ogdensburg

Legislation championed by Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, that will allow the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority to proceed with the expansion at the International Airport and other critical projects at the International Bridge and Port, unanimously passed the Assembly this week (A.5651-A).

The legislation gives the OBPA authority to issue bonds to improve its facilities by financing projects, including for the International Airport – an $18.5 million project, which will be mostly repaid by the federal government, that’s currently in progress. The bonding authority is also expected to spur other projects in the future.

“The passage of this legislation is great news for the city of Ogdensburg,” Russell said. “The Ogdensburg International Airport is one of the most important means available to North Country residents who need to reach other parts of the state, nation, and world for business and pleasure. I’m proud to lead my colleagues in the Assembly in supporting the OBPA as they work to attract private partners to the airport, facilitating new opportunities, and stimulating the region’s economy.”

The bill passed the state Senate earlier this week thanks to efforts by Russell to secure a compromise with colleagues across the aisle. The legislation now awaits the governor’s signature.

“The Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority sincerely appreciates the efforts of Assemblywoman Russell and all of our elected representatives in securing the bonding legislation necessary for job-creating infrastructure projects such as the Runway Expansion and Bridge Rehabilitation Projects,” OBPA Executive Director Wade A. Davis said. “Addie's continued support for expansion and rehabilitation of infrastructure in Northern New York is key to the generation of jobs in the private sector and is greatly appreciated.”
